CASE STUDY - SITE SAFETY
FCC Environment
About FCC Environment
FCC Environment is a leading waste and resource management company with a widespread network of facilities across the UK. Their Nottingham location, one of several operational sites, plays a critical role in their operations and is responsible for processing various types of waste and recyclable materials.
The Opportunity
FCC Environment’s Nottingham site faced a challenge with the clarity and visibility of safety protocols for entering the main working area. The site has three key entrances:
APCR
Permit Office
Main Entrance
At these entry points, there was little to no visual communication about the specific personal protective equipment (PPE) required for individuals entering the working area. Furthermore, it was unclear at what point exactly PPE became mandatory, leaving room for confusion and potential safety risks. This lack of clarity posed an opportunity to enhance safety awareness and improve the overall site safety culture.
The Solution
These arches (a very noticeable Visual Management tool) were strategically placed at the entrances to visually communicate the necessary PPE requirements, including hard hats, safety gloves, high-visibility vests, and other equipment based on the specific area. The arches not only made it clear what PPE was required but also served as a physical threshold, signalling to visitors and workers alike that additional safety measures were needed beyond that point.
This added an extra layer of caution and ensured that everyone was aware of the safety protocols before entering the work zone.
The Result
Additionally, other FCC Environment sites across the UK have taken notice of the successful implementation at the Nottingham site. Positive feedback has been received from other locations, and there is potential for this solution to be rolled out across the wider network, further enhancing safety communication across all facilities.
Conclusion
FCC Environment has set a new standard for safety communication, with other sites now looking to adopt this effective solution. This case study highlights the importance of clear, visual communication in high-risk environments and its potential to drive safety improvements across the company.
